Within class differentiation: Observation guide
An observation document in which attention is paid to the following accents of the teacher:
- appeals to the different senses,
- offers structure,
- promotes insight,
- offers different ways to actively deal with the subject matter,
- offers various options for students to demonstrate what they have learned,
- provides support to learners to set goals and priorities,
- caters to their interests,
- encourages perseverance and commitment,
- offers options for self-regulation.
These parts are based on the nine guidelines of UDL. The teacher takes into account the differences between the pupils, the different needs and the different talents. In this way he does within class differentiation.
Use
The observation guide is suitable for allowing student teachers to observe an existing classroom practice and/or to prepare their own (internship) lessons.
Novice/experienced teachers can use the observation guide to (proactively) evaluate their pedagogical-didactic actions and make targeted adjustments.
This tool can also be used in the context of peer review.
The observation that was elaborated and extensively tested in 2013 in the context of the Inner Class Differentiation project of the former ELANt (Expertise Network Lerarenopleidingen Antwerpen) was updated and extensively tested again. A manual has also been developed.
