The Moon: Visual theater

DE MAAN creates visual theater for a young audience that is addressed in an adult way. It is an open house with deep-rooted origins in puppet theater. However, that category is being stretched more and more to broader visual performance. As long as the choice is adventurous, in scenic means but also in makers. DE MAAN does not want to ignore the direct and poetic aspects of puppet theater, but takes that as one of the possible starting points alongside others. From now on we call ourselves “image smithy”.

DE MAAN also wants to be a flow area for young makers, in addition to fixed values. To this end, it developed a specific effect, JONG GOLD, based on the golden cube around the small theater hall where research and experimentation can be carried out.

DE MAAN operates from its building in Mechelen, but also travels nationally and internationally.

Beeldsmederij DE MAAN wants to touch, surprise, fascinate, amaze or think about children, but also young people and adults. And preferably all at the same time. Sometimes with a good story as a starting point, then again with a strong image. We live in times of hybrids, hybrids, crossovers. DE MAAN wants to help guide this trend. She wants to create a biotope of makers, designers and playing people who are in dialogue with each other in a society that seems to be more in monologue with itself every day.

We want to offer the spectators the richest possible experience in all areas: layered, varied, adventurous. We often do this outside the traditional framework, so that 'normal' theater viewing is enriched or recalibrated into a more comprehensive experience. DE MAAN is constantly looking for exciting and changing relationships with its audience.

In this way we try to stay on the skin of our time in form and content by presenting performances that are as relevant as possible, in which humor and poetry often predominate. In the context of the diversity evolution in society, more and more collaborations will be set up in the future with artists with a migrant background. In this way we keep our sights as open as possible and here too we keep our finger on the pulse of the times. If theater claims to be a reflection of society, this is more than necessary.
