Antwerp songbook: Lesson idea love songs

The Antwerp Songbook is the oldest and most famous printed book with secular songs from our literature. It belongs to the literary canon, the list of texts considered essential Dutch-language literature by the literary field in Flanders.

The only copy we have of this songbook was published in 1544 by the Antwerp printer Jan Roulans and it is at least the third, expanded edition. The booklet contains 221 song lyrics, but without music notation and without illustrations. Apparently there was no need for staves, because the melodies were sufficiently known. Researchers have been able to identify the melodies of more than half of the texts. Sound recordings have now also been made of many of these songs.
