Take your class to the new Damien Museum: Educational offer

Father Damien (1840-1889), the greatest Belgian, lived two centuries ago. His message of connection, respect and solidarity across borders remains very topical. The renovated Damiaan Museum, a contemporary and interactive experience center, takes you in Damiaan's footsteps.

Damian behind

In Ninde - a hamlet of Tremelo - Jef De Veuster was born. As a visitor you suddenly end up in the living room of Damian's family. A little later you are in higher spheres. Jef chooses to become a missionary. He is given a new name 'Damiaan' and leaves as a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands. You follow him to the island of Molokai where he is committed to sick people, who are excluded and abandoned. Together with them, Damiaan is building a community in which no one is left out. You will get to know Damiaanactie, which today continues Damiaan's life's work and gives hope to millions of people with leprosy and TB. Finally, you can test how there is a Damian in each of us.

Lesson folder and workshops

Through fun and instructive workshops in the Damiaan Museum and a digital lesson folder for preparation and processing in the classroom, the students of the first and second grade of primary education become acquainted in a surprising and interactive way with the figure of Damiaan and how he can use contemporary values such as openness, dialogue, embodied hospitality, respect, empathy and solidarity. They also discover how to follow in his footsteps today. Starting from the current attainment targets, curricula and learning objectives, thinking (knowledge, insight and reflection), doing and experiencing (skills) are central, with an eye for the diversity of the class group. Extra attention is paid to children with a visual, auditory or cognitive disability.
As a teacher, you will receive an extensive lesson folder in advance to prepare for and discuss the visit in class.

A visit with the class takes at least half a day, transport and visit included. The total cost including lesson folder, material and guidance is 4 euros per student.
